Sleep Rhythms
Thalamus · Brainstem
The question
Sleep is not an off state but a change of rhythm. The thalamus generates 12–15 Hz spindles that keep cortex and hippocampus in step, and the brainstem flips the switch into REM sleep. We record where these rhythms start, how they spread, and what weakens with age.
