The question
Before a hand reaches out, motor cortex is already preparing the movement. We read direction and speed from that preparatory activity ahead of time, and carry the decoders into brain–machine interfaces that let people who cannot move control a cursor or a robotic arm. Electrode signals shift a little within weeks, so our current goal is a decoder that adapts to those changes by itself.
